Legal Moves
Kryger Alexander Carlson PC is very pleased to announce the addition of attorney Julene M. Quinn. Julene comes to the firm after more than twenty years at SAIF Corporation, where she specialized in appellate and trial matters. She has handled well over 100 cases before the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, with over 60 reported decisions. Julene’s appellate practice emphasizes workers’ compensation cases as well as a full range of civil and administrative matters. Julene also handles matters at the administrative level in workers’ compensation and Social Security disability cases as well as personal injury matters. Julene obtained her B.A. in economics from the University of Michigan. She received her J.D. from the Washington College of Law at The American University in Washington, D.C. U.S. District Court Vacancy
Senator Wyden’s office is now accepting applications for the judicial position on the U.S. District Court for Oregon to fill the seat vacated by Judge Michael R. Hogan.
LBBA fondly remembers attorney Don Reiling
Don Reiling passed away this morning. He had been battling cancer. Don practiced law for over 50 years, served as a municipal court judge, and as a mentor to many in the community. He is remembered as having had a great sense of humor and always being fun to talk to. His service will be at St. Mary’s Church in Albany, and there will be a Celebration of Life at Springhill Country Club, dates and times to be determined.

LBBA 2011 Softball Match: A Raging Success!
It was a fun afternoon and an exciting game…more than 30 people came out on one of the warmest days so far this summer…two teams of 12 people each played, representing Linn and Benton Counties…after the first three innings Benton County was in the lead 11-7… after the BBQ break, Benton County decided to let Linn County have a turn and relinquished the lead in the final three innings…Linn County won by one point, 11-12. You can be a part of the 2012 LBBA softbqll match! Stay tuned for details!

Linn County Mediation/Arbitration Committe seeks Volunteer Attorney
The Mediation/Arbitration Commission is seeking a volunteer attorney to serve on the commission. They meet at noon quarterly and beginning in October 2011 will meet twice a year. Attached blow is the only a proposed changed to the Linn County Supplementary Local Court Rules for 2011. The comment period has begun. The court requests that any comments on the rule be made by August 31.

Governor Kulongoski Announces Judicial Appointment
(Salem) – Governor Ted Kulongoski today announced the appointment of James Egan to the Linn County Circuit Court. Judge Egan will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Rick McCormick which was effective May 31, 2010.

February’s Tips from the Bench program and March’s Child Abuse Reporting events have been approved for CLE credits.
17th Annual Litigation Institute and Retreat to be Held in March
The Litigation Institute and Retreat offers litigators and aspiring litigators a chance to learn techniques from the best. This year’s retreat will be held March 5-6 at Skamania Lodge in the Columbia River Gorge; scholarships are available.

Expiration of Terms on the Linn County Law Library Committee
Two terms have expired on the Linn County Law Library Committee. Position No. 1 was held by Judge Rick McCormick. Position No. 6 has been held by Edward Schultz. Only judges may hold Position No. 1 and only lawyers in private practice or residence in Lin County may apply for position 6. The Linn-Benton Bar Association will vote on nominations for the position at our upcoming meeting on Feb. 10, 2010.

Update on Merger of Linn and Benton Bars
Before the merger of the two bars can be formalized, members of Linn and Benton County bars will need to vote to accept the merger. Over the next week you will receive a simplistic ballot in the mail. This ballot should be returned as soon as possible to complete the merger process. If the merger succeeds, George Heilig will draft the appropriate documents to formalize the process.
Merger of Linn and Benton County Bar Associations
The Linn and Benton County bar associations have made the decision to merge and form one larger association. The new association will operate under the name Linn-Benton Bar Association (“LBBA”). The LBBA will be run as a non-profit organization under 501c(6).
LBBA Goals for 2009-10
The board has met numerous times this summer spending considerable time on how to make the LBBA more relevant for a full-time practicing attorney.
Fundraising Goal for 2009-10
Each year the LBBA will select a charitable organization or cause to fundraise for. This year the board has selected the Campaign for Equal Justice (“CEJ”). CEJ supports 91 legal aid attorneys in 19 communities. Legal aid attorneys assist low-income Oregonians all across the state. Legal aid represents people with high priority needs – food, shelter, medical care, income maintenance and safety from harm. About 40 percent of their work is in family law, usually helping victims of domestic violence.
Linn-Benton Bar Association Creates New Website
LBBA has invested in a new website which will be operational starting the second week of September. The new address is www.linnbentonbar.com.
